Five Reasons to Learn English

Do you want to learn English or improve your language skills but you are not sure whether or not it might be worth the effort? Well, I could mention many reasons to learn English since its benefits are countless (I am not exaggerating about it, believe me). However, on this particular occasion, I am giving you five main purposes to put hands-on learning the language as soon as you can.

Socialising with people from different cultures.

“I couldn’t make new friends during my trip because I didn’t understand the (English) language.”

Here I am quoting many learners who have reached out to me asking for help so as to improve their English as a tool to socialise with people from abroad after failing to do so in previous trips. Neither the country you are planning to visit next nor the other people’s nationalities will matter, English will be the common language and the most relevant tool of communication in your trip. Thus, mastering the target language is a must if you aim to get engaged in conversation with people from around the world and learn about their culture.

Tourism

Even if you are planning to visit a country in which English is not its mother tongue, it will be absolutely useful. I know, It would be wonderful if we could speak all the languages in the world. But if not, we have English which has become a global language, and it is currently spoken by about 1.35 billion of the population worldwide, either natively or as a second and foreign language. As a matter of fact, English will be your gem in your next adventure.

Studying or working abroad

Are you thinking about moving abroad either for work or study to an English-speaking country? If so, you will not only need to use the English language at work or college but also on a daily basis: to do the shopping, buy transport tickets, enrol in the gym, and even communicate with your neighbours, workmates or classmates. Furthermore, as I have mentioned above, English will be very useful if you move to any foreign country while you are still learning the local language.

Raising your employability

Employability

English has become lingua franca for business, technology and science among other fields. Thus, it is no novelty that employability increases for those people who master the target language. In fact, it might connect candidates to globally recognised companies worldwide and provide professionals with better job opportunities. According to studies, people who speak one (or more than one) foreign language tend to be better at problem-solving and creativity than those who do not. This makes bilingual or multilingual people strong candidates due to the soft skills that are developed as a consequence from learning a foreign language. Last but not least, certain companies increase the salaries of those employees who can speak English. This being said, I encourage you to find a language course that suits your needs and start learning it as soon as you can.

Exercising the mind and keeping your brain active

Numerous scientific studies have revealed that the brain of a foreign language learner works and looks different to those who only speak only one language. Scientists observed a denser grey-matter in bilingual people as well as an impact on the white-matter, which is a system that coordinates communication between the different brain regions. This system helps the brain to learn and function. Furthermore, it has been proved that learning a foreign language can slow symptoms of mental diseases, such as dementia or Alzheimer, to up to four/ five years.

I am fully aware that learning a new language requires time, patience and a lot of dedication. However, I can assure you it will be absolutely worth the effort.
